Welcome

Dear All:

The second North American Symposium on Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (NASLIBS 2009) Conference will be held on July 13-15, 2009 in New Orleans, LA.  NASLIBS 2009 will focus on the scientific and commercial developments, as well as applications of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS).  A significant feature of this technique, currently under rapid development, is the capability of remote/standoff and real-time determination of the chemical composition of any sample, whatever its nature or physical state.

This meeting is organized by the Mississippi State University (USA), in collaboration with many academic, government, and industrial laboratories, as well as companies engaged in research and development of LIBS.
NASLIBS 2009 will bring together experts and young researchers in the field, specialists from analytical laboratories and engineers from the industry concerned with applications and instrumental development to examine recent progress and to define the needs. The central topic of NASLIBS 2009, "LIBS: from the Lab to Dual-Use", aims at emphasizing the important developments in applications to civilian as well as military analytical needs in the field as well as to the contributions of fundamental knowledge to the analytical and instrumental control of LIBS.  Progress in the use of LIBS for security and protection will be highlighted.

After introduction by invited speakers, new developments and results will be presented in oral and poster presentations. To facilitate scientific exchanges, posters will be displayed during the whole duration of the symposium. Participation of young researchers will be stimulated by a reduction in the registration fees and the attribution of special young researcher's awards.
The best contributions presented at NASLIBS 2009 will be published in a feature issue of Applied Optics after peer-review.

A technical exhibition will present new developments in LIBS hardware, instrumentation, and related products during the whole symposium.
During the half-day preceding the symposium, introductory short courses will be organized for newcomers to LIBS. A social program for accompanying persons and conference attendees will be offered including a welcome reception and
Cruise dinner with Jazz.
